The NBA world was shocked on Wednesday morning by an ESPN report that said
Philadelphia 76ers' president of basketball operations
Daryl Morey had inquired with the
Los Angeles Lakers about acquiring
LeBron James. The Lakers, of course, denied any sort of deal for James.
But that doesn't mean that people stopped thinking about the idea of James traveling to the City of Brotherly Love. If the Lakers fail to make the playoffs, is there a chance that a disgruntled James could leave Los Angeles and join
Joel Embiid and his team?
It could be possibly, mostly because of what the 76ers would offer James. Not only would they definitely give him a hefty contract, but they would also provide him with a team that he doesn't have to be the leader for.
Joel Embiid is one of the most dominant and impressive young players in the league, a future Hall of Famer who can carry his team. That means that James, who would be close to 40 at the time of any potential move, would actually be able to get some rest and not put the weight of the team on his shoulders.
Morey and his staff will have a lot of cap space to work with this summer too, which means they'd be able to afford a very nice salary for the aging superstar. And Morey's past has shown that he will do whatever it takes to sign James.
Of course, this is all speculation and inside reporting has said that James wants to remain a Laker. But if he sours on Los Angeles and decides he wants to move, the 76ers really could be a comfortable landing spot for him.
