In the Phoenix Suns game against the Philadelphia 76ers, Kevin Durant scored 22 points and passed Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal for 8th on the NBA all-time scoring list with a midrange jumper in the 3rd quarter.
The member on Inside the NBA took the time to praise KD following this accomplishment. He congratulated the 35-year-old and said that if there was anyone to break his record it would be the 4-time scoring champ.
Shaq then went on to challenge Durant, saying that he wants to see the 14-time All-Star continue his dominant scoring and aim to be 1st on the NBA all-time scoring list. As of right now, LeBron James is the leading scorer in league history with 40,179 points and counting.
In his postgame interview, KD said that it’s a major honor to be mentioned in the same category as Shaq, who’s one of the all-time greats in sports history. He then went on to acknowledge everyone on the scoring list, saying that they all had great careers and are very important figures in the NBA.
He continued to show respect to the ones before him who paved the way for the current generation. However, the Slim Reaper reiterated that basketball isn’t all about scoring. He was more proud of his team’s win, stating it was huge for them considering the tight playoff race out West. Durant stated that the team defense was key to picking up this victory and he wants to build momentum off of this.
The Suns are 40-29 and currently the 8th seed in the West, but they sit just 0.5 games out of the 6th seed. This is what they have their eyes set on so they can avoid the play-in tournament. Phoenix will play against the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday.
