Klay Thompson of the Golden State Warriors just experienced one of the biggest changes of his career as head coach Steve Kerr moved him to the bench for the first time since his rookie season. Since becoming part of the second unit, Thompson has shown some flashes of brilliance, but the future of his career at Golden State remains in doubt.
Speaking to The Athletic, Thompson made it clear that he hopes to stay with this team for the rest of his career. When asked if his move to the bench changed his outlook on the team and his desire to remain with the Warriors, Thompson was direct and to the point.
“Not really,” he said.
He went on: “I mean, you’ve still got to examine all of your options, but I would love to be a Warrior for life.”
With that statement, Thompson has slightly left the door open for the possibility of him leaving the only team he has ever played for.
So far this season, Thompson has averaged 17.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.2 assists on 41.8% from the floor and 37.2% from the three-point line. Those are all mostly career lows for the four-time champion.
Thompson still doesn't have any sort of contract with the Warriors beyond this season. That means that if the team decides to part ways with him, or he chooses to head to another destination, there will be nothing preventing his tenure with the Warriors from coming to an end.
Thompson leaving the Warriors would be a monumental change that seemed impossible only a few years ago. But with this bad season from the guard creating a ton of questions, the possibility isn't that hard to believe right now.
