James Harden of the
Los Angeles Clippers isn't known as the best defensive player in the NBA but he has had some moments that have impressed.
But on Wednesday, his defense was getting attention for all the wrong reasons. In an odd moment that generated a big response online, Harden was seen throwing his hands up in front of his teammate
Kawhi Leonard's three-point attempt.
Following the block, Leonard's shot didn't land and Kawhi was seen throwing his hands up in confusion.
After the game, Harden gave insight into why he tried to get in the way of his teammate's three-point attempt.
"I was trying to bring some excitement to this team," Harden said to reporters. "I mean, these last few weeks have been a fog for us. I think every team goes through it. So, it was just me trying to create energy, create a great vibe for this team. Maybe it would've been better if he had made the shot... but I was trying to give them something to laugh about, some excitement."
It was a confusing moment and some analysts and writers aren't necessarily buying Harden's explanation. Perhaps he was still in the "fog" that he mentioned and didn't quite realize what he was doing. Whatever the reason, it was an unneeded move by Harden.
The Clippers pulled away with a 116-103 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, ending their two-game losing streak. They are now set to face the Blazers one more time before squaring off against the Philadelphia 76ers and Indiana Pacers in the days ahead.
Harden made it seem like his unexpected block was a move to drum up more energy with his team. He even made it seem like it was a lighthearted and funny moment. However, if the Clippers would have lost the game, no one would have been laughing and he would have been taking the blame.
