Jonathan Kuminga of the Golden State Warriors admitted that his head coach, Steve Kerr, targets him over other players on the team. During multiple games, Kerr has directly focused on Kuminga and even yelled at him in front of other players.
But he is only doing this because he truly believes in him, according to Kuminga.
Speaking with NBC Sports, Kuminga spoke about how Kerr lays into him:
“There are definitely times where I think I’m doing well, and Steve doesn’t think I’m doing well because he wants me to do better. There was a game, I think it was a couple of weeks ago where he just took a timeout to yell at me in front of everybody.”
He went on:
"Even if I think I didn’t do anything wrong I’ll be like ‘My bad, my fault.’ He sees something I don’t think I see, and so do all the other coaches so they push me harder and after the game when I look back and see a good result I’m like ‘Oh it worked.’ ”
Kuminga believes that he is being singled out because Kerr knows the potential he has. After this season, he's not alone.
Kuminga started the year with uneven results and wasn't looking as great as fans had hoped. Kuminga reportedly wasn't very happy with his role on the team. Then around mid-January, he and Kerr had a conversation and they hashed out their differences and then Kuminga got more time on the court and, consequently, started doing better work too.
