It seems like Kobe Bryant's statue has misspelled 'Jose Calderon,' 'Von Wafer,' and 'Coach's Decision.' 😬 (h/t @drevoigt )
Just last month, fans and members of the Los Angeles Lakers paid tribute to the late Kobe Bryant when they unveiled the first statue in his honor outside of Crypto.com Arena. It was a powerful and special moment for the team, Bryant's family, and faithful followers of the Lakers all over the world.
However, just a few weeks later, it has become apparent that the statue contains a few unfortunate typos and the team has promised to fix them as soon as possible.
There are multiple errors etched onto the base of the marble of the statue. Jose Calderon's and Von Wafer's names are misspelled and "Coach's Decision" is also misspelled. The errors were pointed out on social media and, just a few hours later, the Lakers released a statement saying they'd address it as soon as possible.
"We have been aware of this for a few weeks and are already working to get it corrected soon," a Lakers spokesperson said in a statement on Monday.
The statue is the first of three planned memorials to the late Bryant, who passed away in a 2020 helicopter crash along with his daughter Gianna and seven other people. The Bryant statue was revealed to the world on February 8, 2024 - 2/8/24 - which symbolized the two numbers Bryant wore on his jersey as well as the one that his daughter had on hers.
The two other statues have been announced but no other plans about them have been divulged by the Lakers.
