This year's All-Star Weekend featured a highly anticipated three-point contest between Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry and WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu. It was perhaps the biggest highlight of the weekend and received a great response from fans.
It received such a good response, in fact, that the NBA might try to duplicate it next season.
NBA insider Shams Charania is reporting that the league is contemplating a 2025 shooting contest that would feature Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson versus Sabrina Ionescu and NCAA superstar Caitlin Clark.
"At this point, Stephen Curry vs. Sabrina Ionescu is very likely for next year," Charania reported Tuesday morning "And next year's All-Star Weekend is in the Bay Area, in San Francisco, at Chase Center in 2025. And I'm told, with Caitlin Clark and potentially Klay Thompson, to make it 2 v. 2. I'm told Steph Curry has specifically brought up potentially having Klay Thompson in this competition for next year."
He went on: "Could a guy like Damian Lillard be a candidate as well to join Steph Curry? But those two guys potentially against Sabrina Ionescu and Caitlin Clark, those are all conversations that are going to continue to go on in the coming months and as we get into the 2024-25 season."
This news shows that the league is very interested in expanding upon the excitement that was generated by the competition between Curry and Ionescu. That's not very surprising when you consider that most reviews about the All-Star Weekend have been lukewarm at best lately. The competition between these two stars received a lot of praise and attention and the league is hoping to get more of it next season.
Could this be laying the foundation for a future contest that features some of the biggest stars of the NBA battling against the biggest icons of the WNBA?
