With Dallas Mavericks' superstar,
Luka Doncic, having yet another impressive season and leading his team's winning streak, the MVP Race is looking very interesting heading its final curve. Doncic dropped 47 points against the league's hottest team, the Houston Rockets on Sunday while having a GOAT performance. Could he be getting into the final conversation? Let's find out who are the top 5 MVP Candidates after week 23 of NBA action.
With players like Jayson Tatum falling behind due to Boston's several losses against the Hawks, or
Domantas Sabonis struggling to get out of the play-in with his Sacramento Kings, there have been some changes.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander hit a game winner to silence the whole Madison Square Garden on Sunday as he remains the closest chaser to the top candidate
Nikola Jokic.
Giannis Antetokounmpo was swirling around but that awful loss in double overtime against the Lakers also set him back.
5 Domantas Sabonis
In three games played last week, Sabonis averages 12 points, 12 rebounds and 9.6 assists. Unfortunately for him, Sacramento managed to win only one of those games. He's been a dominant force this season but the Kings have been having trouble to stay consistent and they will probably end up in the play-in tournament.
4 Giannis Antetokounmpo
Giannis averages 32.0 points, 17.5 rebounds, and 7.5 assists in the two games played with the Bucks last week. Two games, two hard losses for Milwaukee, despite Antetokounmpo's brilliant performances. The greek freak puts great numbers but he seems like after the 2021 championship, he can't get his team over the hump.
3 Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Shai has been a consistent scorer throughout the whole season, and the Oklahoma City Thunder are fighting for the top spot in the Western Conference. Last week they won two games and lost 1, and Shai continued to be great the games he played. He's been playing through some injuries but he's staying right there.
2 Nikola Jokic
Another losing streak for the Denver Nuggets last week. They are missing Jamal Murray and while Jokic has been wonderful like always, those games lost against Phoenix and Minnesota could end up affecting the serbian center chances to repeat as the NBA most valuable player.
1 Luka Doncic
Luka Doncic continues to command his team's seven-game winning streak. In addition, the Mavericks are the hottest team in the NBA right now, winning 11 of their last 12. Over the last week, Doncic averaged 24.3 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 10.3 assists. Dallas is nearly saved from that terrifying play-in tournament and this could be the major reason for Luka to earn his first MVP.
