Episode two in Mile High City of this amazing first round battle between the Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Lakers was the best game of the playoffs up to this point. LeBron James and Anthony Davis gave their absolute best but the reigning champions have a 1-2 combo in Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray that proved once again be too much for the Lakers. Nuggets win 101-99 and now are up 2-0.
This series has surpassed all levels of expectation so far. The LA Lakers played at the top of their game tonight. Anthony Davis dominated Jokic in the first half, on the other hand, LeBron James also played out of his mind. This showdown featured so many highlights from these two that you might think that the Lakers won the game.
Denver shot poorly all night from three, relying mostly on what Jokic or Michael Porter Jr could do to keep the team near in the scoreboard. Jamal Murray had an off-night up until the fourth, so the Nuggets scoring was severily affected for the most part of the game.
D'Angelo Russell came up strong from the start, draining 5 three-pointers in the first half. AD scored at will, helping the Lakers to take a 20-point lead early in the third.
But Denver kept going, playing good defense on LA and putting Davis in foul trouble. Slowly the Nuggets began to make some shots and entered the fourth down by 10.
LeBron James was on full display on the last period. The King was unstoppable from long distance, and attacking the rim like his younger days. Everytime Denver was near, LeBron appeared to put out the fire. AD was visibly exhausted at some points, as clashing with Jokic all game took the best of him.
The whole Nuggets squad stepped forward and made some big shots, but Jamal Murray saved the best for the last. The shooting guard overcame his struggles with the basket when it was most needed, exploding with 14 points, including his outstanding buzzer beater to send the Lakers home down 2-0.
Nikola Jokic's display was in line with the game. He was a beast on the boards, Davis seemed to have him under control but Jokic always finds ways to score and generate offense. He registered an unbelievable triple-double of 27 points, 20 rebounds and 10 assists. Porter Jr had 22 points and 9 rebounds.
For the Lakers, James scored 26 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished 12 assists. Anthony Davis finished the game with 32 points and 11 rebounds. DLO collaborated with 23 points.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Lakers, who will try to win their first game of the series at home on Thursday night.
