His team might not be amazing but Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs is definitely a rookie gaining a lot of attention. That has been the case since before the season even began, as Wembanyama was being called a generational talent who could change the league forever.
The star rookie has been doing very well so far this season and there is a chance that he will get even more time to shine as the regular season reaches an end.
Speaking to the press, head coach Gregg Popovich said that he plans to keep Wembanyama on the court for a longer amount of time toward the end of the season.
Popovich said:
“I think he’s still at 27 or 28 (minutes) or something like that. It’s amazing the numbers he’s getting for that few minutes. But we’ve decided that that’s the best way to bring him along right now. But I think toward the end of the season we’ll raise it a little bit.”
Wembanyama is averaging 28.6 minutes per game right now and averaging 20.5 points and 10 rebounds per game. He is also leading the league in blocks with 3.2 per game.
It makes a lot of sense that Wembanyama would receive more time in games toward the end of the season because the Spurs have all but no chance of making the playoffs this year. That means that Wembanyama can use the end of the regular season as a chance to perfect his skills and essentially get more practice before the summer break.
There has been a lot of speculation about the Spurs making some roster changes in the summer, perhaps even landing a star point guard like Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks. Wembanyama has shown that he has a ton of promise but he just needs a better team built around him.
