Thursday February 8 marks the latest NBA
trade deadline, a chance for teams to make some major changes in hopes of finishing out the second half of the season strongly. Right now, the front offices for the Los Angeles Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, and others are hard at work and on the phones attempting to improve their rosters.
Over the last several years, the league has seen substantial changes at the trade deadline, featuring some of the biggest names in the game.
Just last year, the Phoenix Suns shook up the entire NBA when they landed
Kevin Durant, then of the Brooklyn Nets. In exchange for Durant, the Suns sent the Nets several draft picks and youthful up-and-coming stars. Since their signing of Durant, the team has still suffered from many of the same problems they had in the past.
One of the most consequential trades of the last few years was when the Indiana Pacers acquired
Tyrese Haliburton and Buddy Hield of the Sacramento Kings. At the time, few people knew just how much these players would impact their new teams. Since then, the Pacers and Kings have become highly competitive while Haliburton and Sabonis have played at All-Star levels. This is one of the few trades that benefitted both teams involved.
Another shocking trade held at the deadline was back in 2011, when the New York Knicks landed
Carmelo Anthony, formerly of the Denver Nuggets. The deal included Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Anthony Carter, Renaldo Balkman, Shelden Williams, and Raymond Felton going to New York while the Nuggets received Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinair, Timofey Mozgov, and draft picks. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in Anthony's career and allowed him to live his dream of playing for New York.
From
Ray Allen to
James Harden, Tim Hardaway,
Kyrie Irving, Jason Kidd, CJ McCollum, and others, the trade deadline has been a very exciting time for the league. What will this year's deadline bring?.
