James Johnson will remain in Indiana. The Pacers agreed to a second consecutive 10-day contract with the veteran. Although Johnson doesn't play much minutes, Indiana values his presence in the locker room.
The news was reported by ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The Pacers want Johnson to remain attached to their roster for at least 10 more days, and will likely sign him to a non-guaranteed season-ending deal as soon as that time period is up.
Over the past two seasons James Johnson has been linked to the Pacers. Between the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons, the player has played a total of 33 games with Indiana, although with virtually no contribution. His position in the locker room is likely to be similar to that of, for example, Udonis Haslem in his final seasons with the Miami Heat.
The Indiana Pacers project, with the signing via trade of Pascal Siakam this winter, is moving forward rapidly. The franchise's goal is to compete as soon as possible, but also to be strong in the long term. Names like Tyrese Haliburton (23 years old), Bennedict Mathurin (21 years old), Obi Toppin (25 years old), Aaron Nesmith (24 years old) or Jalen Smith (23 years old), need veteran figures in the locker room like James Johonson.
