During Friday night's game against the
New York Knicks,
Victor Wembanyama of the
San Antonio Spurs impressed the crowd with another incredible 40-point, 20-rebound performance. When the game to an end after an overtime period, the Spurs were triumphant and the rookie player was overjoyed. He was so excited, in fact, that he grabbed the ball and heaved it into the stands.
That didn't sit well with the league and on Monday the NBA announced that Wembanyama was being fined $25,000.
The fine isn't a huge surprise, although the total is a bit more than some people expected. The league regularly fines players if they perform actions that are deemed dangerous. Even though it was in a celebratory fashion, Wembanyama's toss could have hurt unsuspecting fans.
The reaction to the fine was mixed, with some people online saying it was too steep and that Wembanyama should have only been charged a cost if he was attempting to hurt someone.
Still, the league has certain rules that all players need to follow about their decorum and how they perform on the court.
Based on what fans have seen during this first season, it's very likely that Wembanyama has a long and successful career in the NBA. That means that this probably will not be the last time that he suffers a fine for acting out.
After the game, Wembanyama was asked about a potential fine for throwing the ball.
"Nah, somebody else is going to pay for it," Wembanyama said. However, it looks like he will be the one who pays.
