Victor Wembanyama secured yesterday the Rookie of the Year award, playing a monster game against the reigning champions and going head to head with Nikola Jokic, probably the best player in the world right now. In an interview after the game, Wemby shared his impressions after such a fantastic win for the San Antonio Spurs. The Spurs are coming...
Throughout his first NBA season, Wembanyama already put his name alongside other legendary players regarding their rookie years. The expectation around this young player are gigantic, but all of them rely in what we have witnessed in his first year playing in the best league in the world.
The Spurs had another bad year as a team, with they've found the center piece to build around and go back to being title contenders as they were not long ago.
Perhaps the biggest responsible of Victor's scoring outburst was Aaron Gordon, after Denver's forward knocked Wemby on the floor late in the first half.
"There's plenty of ways to react but my whole mentality at halftime was ‘how are you going to react to this? What kind of a player are you?' I had to react," Wembanyama said.
In deed he reacted: 17 points in the third quarter, in just three minutes. In addition, Victor helped close the gap on what was an 18-point Spurs deficit at the half.
Wemby also admitted that playing against the defending champions, who entered the night with the top seed in the West, played a part into his mindset as well.
"It's hard, especially playing against a first seed because they [opponents] aren't always the same. It's nothing I haven't seen before. But it's true that I hadn't seen this type of defense in a long time."
The whole Spurs' squad had a little extra juice yesterday. The entire team was motivated to get a win, frustrate Denver's intentions and send a message to the rest of the NBA. If they can beat Denver like they did on Friday night, with the right pieces, San Antonio definitely will be in playoff contention as soon as next year.
