The Kentucky Wildcats are a tradition in college basketball. The University of Kentucky has always characterized to feature some of the best young basketball players. Names such as Karl-Anthony Towns, Devin Booker, De'Aaron Fox and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are just some of the players that have weared proudly the Wildcats uniform. Now, there's another rising star trying to make a name for himself in the NCAA, Rob Dillingham.
Playing under the legendary coach and one of the best recruiters in college basketball history, John Calipari, Rob Dillingham is in the middle of his journey as Kentucky's freshman. He's averaging 15.0 points and 3.8 assists per game, with very nice shooting splits: 48.2% from the floor and 44.5% from three-point land.
Dillingham is a very talented young player, the basketball is just natural for him. It's amazing how being so young, Rob has so many skills in his bag. From excellent handles and shiftiness that allows him to attack and break any defender, to using a very effective floater, making with very high efficiency his shots from the dribble (his seal), finishing with a soft touch at the rim and having a reliable stepback shot. Truly remarkable.
Of course, having all these tools to score, making him sometimes a 'selfish' player, but Rob he can definitely dish some great passes, he can be a play maker if the game needs him to do so. He can play off the ball as well, as he’s shooting an outstanding 54.0% on spot-up threes this season.
With all these possibilities on offense, the question that every front office in the NBA is asking would be if he can defend. The truth is that teams right now tend to hunt smaller players like him. Listed as 6-3, 176 lbs, Rob's defense must improve to avoid being a liability for an NBA team in that aspect of the game. Still, he's very competitive and won't back down on anyone.
If he can compensate his lack of defense with brilliant offensive executions, he could be right at the top of the upcoming draft. He's young, he's only 19 years old so he has room to grow and get better. If he can do it, if he can overcome his size and be even a mediocre defender, his offensive weapons will put him as one of the best prospects for the 2024 NBA Draft.
