Just minutes after his
Golden State Warriors were pushed out of the playoffs,
Klay Thompson was asked about upcoming free agency and the way it might impact his career. Although the four-time champion was expecting the question, he didn't give a definitive answer.
"Considering it's April 17th, I don't think I have to pivot that quickly," Thompson told the press. "When is free agency? July 1st? Yeah, I got some time. I got some time."
Thompson might have some time to consider his options but there is no doubt that he has his work cut out for him.
Thompson signed a five-year, $190 million deal back in 2019, which means that he needs a new deal, either with the Warriors or another team. But no matter who he plays with, Thompson might have to accept a much smaller contract than the one he got five seasons ago.
Thompson has been receiving a lot of attention all season long, as analysts have waited to see if he could shake out of his slump and start putting up strong numbers again. Ultimately, he averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game in 2023-24, his lowest numbers in years.
That means that he will likely be offered a much smaller paycheck than what he is used to. The Warriors might try to get him for cheap, while several other squads could take a run at him. But because of his troubled season, those other teams will also pay him less than what he is used to.
Thompson will now have a chance at redemption. It doesn't matter if he plays for the Warriors or another team, next season will give the star an opportunity to remind people what he is capable of.
