The new rules of the NBA awards that require players to play 65 games to qualify for it also enter into the economic aspect, since many contracts are directly related to being chosen in the
All-NBA Team. This is the case of
Tyrese Haliburton, who is about to lose the option of earning 41 million more if he gets injured again.
The 23-year-old suffered a hamstring injury Jan. 8 in a game against the Boston Celtics that limited his participation in the game.
Haliburton was recently quoted in a report in which he stated that, at the time of the injury, he realized that it was difficult for him to qualify for the supermax. He can miss 3 more this season, otherwise he won't enter the NBA awards and will lose that 41 million on his contract extension.
"The moment I got injured, I think you could see them carrying me around, I got very emotional because at that moment I thought, 'Damn it, it's over,'" he said.
Under the NBA's new 65-game rule, a player is only eligible for a big bonus if he gets to play at least 65 games in the competition.
Haliburton is having an impressive season for the Pacers, where he is averaging 21.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 11.7 assists per game, the best average in the division.
In his last game against the Atlanta Hawks, Haliburton posted 21 points, four rebounds and 12 assists.
