Luka Doncic did it all tonight, as he carried the Dallas
Mavericks to a 122-108 victory over the
New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
The Mavs made a bunch of moves in today’s trade deadline to
bolster their roster for a playoff push. They acquired Daniel Gafford and PJ
Washington in two separate trades, and in return they gave away Richaun Holmes,
Grant Williams, and Seth Curry. These moves improve their frontcourt depth while
providing 2 players that will play nicely off of the dynamic duo of Luka and
Kyrie.
The Slovenian point guard put on a show, finishing with 39
points, 8 rebounds, 11 assists, 4 steals, and 1 block while hitting 7 three
pointers, truly remarkable from someone who is only 24 years old.
Kyrie Irving
ended with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists while Tim Hardaway Jr. had 19
points with 5 made threes off the bench.
The Knicks were without their big 3 in Jalen Brunson, Julius
Randle, and OG Anunoby all due to injury. They were also shorthanded due to
making a big trade, acquiring elite scorers Alec Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic
from the Detroit Pistons.
Therefore, the Villanova teammates led the way tonight. Donte
DiVincenzo scored a team-high 36 points while Josh Hart recorded a triple
double, finishing with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists. Miles McBride
ended with 21 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists while Precious Achiuwa recorded
a 13-point, 16 rebound double-double.
This win improves the Mavs to 29-23, which makes them 8th in
the Western Conference. Dallas is now 1 game behind the 7th seeded Sacramento
Kings and 2 games above the 9th seeded Los Angeles Lakers. They are 5-5 over
their last 10 games and currently on a 3-game winning streak. Their next game
will be on Saturday afternoon against the OKC Thunder.
This loss drops the Knicks to 33-19, which makes them 4th in
the Eastern Conference. New York is 8-2 over their last 10 games. Their next
game will be on Saturday night against the Indiana Pacers.
