The
Orlando Magic will have around 50-60 million in cap space this summer and will be looking to make a big move. Currently they are the 3rd seed in the Eastern Conference and are looking to make a run in the playoffs.
With a bunch of young talent and cap space this summer, they will probably make a big move to try and make them real title contenders. Right now the Magic have their sights set on
Klay Thompson of the
Golden State Warriors.
Klay Thompson who is in the final year of his five-year $190 million contract, is earning $43.2 million for this season. The former four-time NBA champion, and five-time NBA all-star has spent his entire career with the Warriors.
He was eligible for an extension and before this season the Warriors offered him a two-year contract extension around $48 million a year, however he ended up declining that offer. With his future in question with the Warriors and with his name floating around in trade rumors close to the deadline. This could be Thompson last year in Golden State as he is planning to test the open market.
The Warriors who are the 10th seed right now and could end up missing the playoffs this year, will probably be looking to make major changes this offseason and Thompson could be one of those changes.
Thompson, 34, hasn't been the same type of player since he suffered knee and Achilles injuries, that caused him to miss two full seasons and a majority of another season. Last year, he had a good bounce back year, but this year he is only averaging 17.6 points per game which is his lowest since 2013. He is also shooting under 40% from three shooting just 38.4%, which isn't bad it is just below what he normally averages.
He may not be the player he once was but with the Warriors and Thompson potentially parting ways this summer, the question becomes were will Thompson go next? That team could be the Orlando Magic who will be monitoring the situation closely and if he is available with around 50 million in cap space may just be Thompson's next team.
The one thing that Orlando lacks is shooting, as a team they average around 35.3% from three which ranks them 22nd in the NBA. Thompson may not be the same shooter he once was but will definitely improve that area of weakness. With the young core they have and future draft picks, adding a veteran in Klay Thompson with a ton of playoff experience might just be what they need to get over the hump and be true title contenders.
