The Portland Trail Blazers headed to Texas to visit the San Antonio Spurs. Victor Wembanyama, 1st pick of the 2023 NBA Draft, selected by San Antonio facing Scoot Henderson, 3rd pick of the draft for Portland. This two teams have the worst record in the Western Conference, and its safe to say that they are playing at least with one eye already set for the next lottery. Spurs win 116-100.
It's hard to say if the Blazers or the Spurs benefit from winning games. It sounds a bit crazy but it's not far from the truth. Not much was expected from these franchises this regular season, so its hard to define their campaigns as decepointing.
Victor Wembanyama has lived up to the hype. The big man from France has gave us some great performances, in which we've had a hint of how scary Victor will be in a couple of seasons. Tonight, he was the "go to guy" for the Spurs in the first two quarters.
Wemby is unique at filling the stat sheets. 18 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks in just 18 minutes of playing time.
The Blazers had their go to guy too, Anfernee Simmons was aggresive from the start, shooting the lights out from long distance. 5 three pointers made before the break.
The second half saw the Spurs biggest lead, as Jeremy Sochan played really good basketball and collaborated for the 13 points margin in favor of Pop's team. He was perfect from the field and added 8 points.
The last period showed both teams rushing, taking too many threes and poorly executing on offense.
Anfernee Simmons pushed his team, trying to keep them close, but the advantage that the Spurs took in the third seemed too much. Still, the young point guard finished the game with nothing less than 40 points. Deandre Ayton had 20 points.
Scoot Henderson just played a few minutes in which he had 6 points. He didn't returned to action for the second half, same as Jerami Grant.
Sochan was key for the Spurs win, 31 points and 14 rebounds. Wemby backed him up, with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Keldon Johnson added 21 points.
When Spurs head coach, Gregg Popovich was asked about what changed for the Spurs since the last time they played (and lost) to Portland, he answered:
"I think the turnovers. We had less turnovers than that previous game. Overall, we played better basketball today"
Pop praised the team's attitude on the boards, especially Sochan's. He also highlighted the importance of moving the ball and finding the open man.
