For an NBA player, earning a statue outside of an arena is a huge honor that speaks to the value that they brought a franchise and their place in history. It's also something that doesn't happen very often. Not many players have their jerseys retired but even fewer are awarded a statue after they step away from the league.
Speaking on ESPN, Stephen A. Smith listed five current NBA players who deserve statues once they decide to retire.
According to Smith, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors, and Stephen Curry also of the Warriors all should get statues someday.
Smith also said that LeBron James should receive two statues, one for his years playing for the Miami Heat and one for his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
All of these choices make a lot of sense and it's very likely that each of these players will get their respective statues. There is some doubt if both Klay Thompson will get theirs but Curry, James, and Antetokounmpo are all no-brainers.
Will James get two statutes for the Heat and Cavaliers? And what about the Los Angeles Lakers? Will he get one there too?
Another question revolving around this list is how many of these stars will retire with the teams that could someday give them statues. They might someday have statues erected in their honor but that doesn't mean they won't move to other teams before their time in the NBA is over.
Typically, NBA franchises don't even announce plans for statues until a player has retired. That means that we have at least a few more year before find out if Smith's dream list becomes a reality.
