Ben Simmons returned to Philadelphia with his team, the Brooklyn Nets, for the first match scheduled this Saturday in the NBA. Famous for being a tough crowd, the 76ers fans booed Simmons the moment he was getting into the court. It seems that the wounds haven't completedly healed yet.
The story with Ben Simmons and the 76ers goes way back to the 2016 NBA Draft, when the Sixers selected Simmons with the first pick. The point guard had to wait an entire season to make his debut, as he was ruled out from the entire 2016 campaign due to a foot fracture.
By the next season, Ben was able to play and he did it wonderfully, elevating the Sixers to new heights, making them a team able to compete, after many years. Every season the Sixers looked stronger and better, and so did Ben, selected 3 times to the All-Star game the seasons after his debut.
There was just one issue with Simmons that was getting bigger and bigger, his three-point shot or lack of it. This situation got a bit out of control by 2021, after the Sixers were defeated by a less-threatening Atlanta Hawks team. Fans, media, teammates had it with Ben.
And Ben had it with them, so by the next season, he decided that he wasn't going to return to Philadelphia, missing training seassions and team reunions. The situation escalated until February 2022, when the Sixers traded to his current team, the Brooklyn Nets.
It's never good to watch a player being treated like this on the court, but this is what happens when the conflicts are missmanaged. It's unfair for both parts and hopefully in the near future this situation finds its peace.
