BREAKING: Adam Silver is expected to sign an extension that will keep him as NBA commissioner through the end of the decade, per ESPN. Whoa.
The news of commissioner Adam Silver finalizing the details for his contract extension captured attention all over the basketball world. One of the league's top players, Giannis Antetokuonmpo, praised Silver's tenure in the league and showed his support for the upcoming renewal.
"What did he sign, max contract, seven years, $350 million?" laughingly asked Antetokounmpo when asked about Silver's extension deal. "He's done an unbelievable job. He's always been there for us. I don't think there's been a time when I've seen him somewhere and we haven't had a conversation about something I'm concerned about. Whenever I want, I can get in touch with him and set up a meeting...he's always available to everyone."
Since succeeding David Stern in the position, Silver has made some of the most significant changes that are still major successes in improving the NBA as a product. The most noticeable was the inclusion of the end-of-regular-season "play-in," where the 7th through 10th place teams in each conference compete for the final two playoff berths.
The arrival of the new 'In-Season Tournament', which makes the first half of the regular season more attractive with a competition that in its first edition was won by LeBron James' Los Angeles Lakers, last November. The tournament also proved to be a complete success.
Nor should we forget how well the global pandemic of COVID-19 was managed in 2020, which led to the suspension of the NBA in March, and thanks to the Orlando "bubble" it was possible to finish that season with a great show for all the fans of the best league in the world.
