The Miwaukee Bucks have been surrounded by flashlights this season. First, after acquiring superstar point guard, Damian Lillard, in the most important transfer made by any team this campaign. And now, by making another significant move, firing Adrian Griffin and bringing Doc Rivers as their new head coach, in the middle of the season.
After a risky trade for Damian Lillard in August that generated mixed results, the arrival of Jrue Holiday to Boston has had even more impact, being Boston the number 1 seed of all the NBA.
Nowadays, Milwaukee is clearly operating in "championship or bust" mode, replacing rookie coach Griffin by a legend of immense playoff experience.
This decision demonstrates the Bucks' determination to go all in.
Rivers faces a variety of challenges, from quickly establishing relationships with Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo, to managing expectations and proving his worth as a coach after some recent playoff struggles.
His most crucial task, however, will be to improve the Bucks' defense, as despite their 30-13 record, they have deficiencies that could be magnified at key moments in the playoffs.
With a defensive rating that ranks 21st, Rivers will need to find solutions to strengthen a defense that currently looks leaky.
Given that since 2010 only two championship teams have finished outside the top 10 in defensive rating, Rivers will need to implement significant changes for the Bucks to reach their championship aspirations.
