Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers are enjoying an almost perfect present. They are one of the best teams this season, with an awesome streak of games won (9 of the last 10). But not everything is quite perfect, as Mitchell contract expires in the summer of 2025 and lately, rumors of him taking his talents to a bigger market are starting to rise.
As published by HoopsHype, an anonymous NBA Eastern Conference executive has spoken about the Cavs star's future, and he is reportedly far from Cleveland, at least after 2025, when his current contract with the Ohio franchise ends in free agency: "There's no question he'll be gone once his contract is up," he said.
The thing is that these statements, true or not, are quite surprising considering the context in which they are given, with Cleveland Cavaliers fighting for the top spots in the East and Mitchell achieving an outstanding individual season, with a good chance of going deep in the playoffs. Why should the player leave a place where he is the star, performs well and can also compete for the ring?
The Cavs, as of today, find themselves in second place in the Eastern Conference with a 36-17 record, having pulled even with the third-place Milwaukee Bucks (35-20), but still far behind the leader Boston Celtics, who own a 43-12 record.
Mitchell, meanwhile, is averaging 28.4 points (4th highest in the NBA), 5.4 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game in this 2023/24 NBA season and is shooting 47.3% from the field and 36.1% on three-pointers.
