The Golden State Warriors look like they're on their downfall. The team, at least some members, are severily underperforming this season. The Dubs have the highest payroll of all NBA and with half season played, they are currently 12th in the Western Conference with a 18-22 record. 4 victories are between them and Utah Jazz, the last team that would advance to the Play-in.
The illusion of salvaging the season through a high-caliber trade is fading, not only because key players like OG Anunoby and Pascal Siakam already have new destinations, but also because the Warriors need more than a simple signing to revitalize their title aspirations.
The reality is that neither Anunoby nor Siakam, nor players like Zach LaVine or Dejounte Murray, could have catapulted Golden State into the upper stage of the Western Conference.
The Warriors' trajectory is affected by a mix of age, depth and deficiencies. Management led by Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Kirk Lacob faces the task of using the trade deadline and the remainder of the season to map out a strategy that can reopen the title window in 2025.
Decisions on young talent like Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody; contracts like Andrew Wiggins; and the ability of veterans like Draymond Green and Klay Thompson to contribute; all become essential in defining Golden State's immediate future.
Amid the uncertainty, it's clear that future draft picks should not be compromised in potential trades, as neither the team nor the current trade market warrant such a waiver.
The option of letting go of the present, especially as Stephen Curry nears his 36th birthday, may not be appetizing, but it presents itself as the only logical action for the Warriors at present.
